“Let them thank the Lord for his mercy, his wonders for the children of men, for he satisfies the thirsty soul, and the hungry he fills with good things.” Psalm 107:8,9
For almost 90 years, men, women, and children in need have been coming to the landmark “Red Door” located in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh to receive a bagged lunch as well as to be encouraged in the gift of hope. The Red Door program was started by St. Mary of Mercy Church in response to the Great Depression in an effort to relieve those struggling with financial adversity. All were welcome, no questions asked, and the tradition still continues today with people lining up to receive a free lunch.
Volunteers participate faithfully every week to prepare lunches and to serve the men, women, and children who come to the Red Door. Presently those who come to the Red Door number from 125 people in the winter months to 225 during the summer. In addition to those who volunteer regularly at the Red Door, numerous groups from local churches, businesses, and organizations also provide support through periodic volunteer participation on site as well as through donation.
Through the ministry of St. Faustina’s Gate, the Red Door also provides essential seasonal clothing and shoes as well as other resources such as clean socks, toiletries, blankets, etc. For holidays, lunch is served inside the church hall inviting all Red Door guests to a warm meal, hospitality, and fellowship. Most importantly, the Red Door ministry strives to be a loving presence to those who come to its doorstep…reflecting back the true dignity and value of each man, woman, and child who come as welcomed guests.
Thank you for your interest, prayers, and support of the Red Door!
